Close to the Eastside Gallery, one of the last remaining sections of the Berlin Wall, the Mercedes-Benz Arena is the city’s largest and most modern multifunctional arena. The programme is packed with a series of stunning highlights – from pop stars to motorbike shows and sports events. In the evening, Lady Gaga struts her stuff in her spectacular show and the very next day the arena is hosting a fast-paced game of ice hockey out on the rink.
But where did all that ice suddenly come from? The answer – it’s always there! Well-insulated deep in the arena’s floor during other events, the ice is kept at a constant minus 12 degrees Celsius, patiently waiting for the next game of the Eisbären, Berlin’s most successful ice hockey team. And when the ice is stored away again, the Mercedes-Benz Arena is also the home venue for top basketball team Alba Berlin. Inaugurated in 2008, the arena has a capacity of nearly 17,000, and hosts a wealth of the best in sports events, shows and concerts.
